He harbors an intense resentment towards the Radiant Parish and wishes to bring about its end, through any means necessary.

He is sometimes frustrated with the party’s antics, but has a clear fondness for them, especially Dane. He enjoys playing music and gets along well with the DJ Barrius McFinger. He has worked closely beside Dawn for several years and considers her as his closest, most trusted ally. He doesn't act on his romantic feelings towards her because he prioritizes their mission.

In Dane's Birthday Jubilee

When DBJ begins, Cai and Dawn have a solid handle on running the cloud guild and keeping tabs on the Parish. He hires the party to work for the guild after they help Dawn capture the flare in pine grove. He is confident that the flares are manifestations of Aubade’s power and is honest with the party about the guilds true goals of overthrowing the Radiant Parish.

When he taught Furn how to cast the gem containment spell, he vaguely mused about how he had been in disguise most of his life. He mostly kept busy with administrative work whenever the party was away, as the guild still operated like a normal adventurer’s guild. When the party told Cai that Torian had drowned in the the Bottomless Lake’s spiral staircase, he became withdrawn and depressed for several days. He had very complicated feelings about Torian's supposed death, and then was oddly relieved when he found out the party had been mistaken.

Though Cai disliked Ress, he was the first to suggest that the party seek him out for information about the flare. He asks the party to accompany him and Dawn into the pocket dimension where the flare resides, where the celestial scolds him in the language of angels until he breaks down. He later tells them that he broke into a church when he was younger and met Aubade, who blinded him.

When the party witnesses a Radiant Parish ceremony celebrating Firekeeper Morris’s “ascension,” Cai is intrigued that another member of the parish other than Gloria and Torian was able to become an angel. Despite himself, he is relieved when the party reports that Ress is unharmed.

During the party’s adventure in Maverick, Cai visits the Pine Grove flare several times and tries to make sense of its origin. He knows the celestial language and understands the few words that the beast keeps repeating, one of which is “Rosenthal,” the name of a missing member of the Parish. The flare continues to attack him relentlessly every time he visits, flying into a rage whenever he enters the pocket dimension. He does not let Dawn come with him, much to her chagrin.

He is surprised when the party tell him about their conversation with Torian in which he revealed that the flares were indeed transformed blasphemers and showed them his void eyes. Cai is aware that Torian began hiding his face behind his wings after the Aubade incident. When he puts the gem containing the flare from Maverick into his lockbox, the party spots his old Book of Aubade that he forgot was even in there. He takes care to not get defensive and explains that it’s an old copy he stole for research purposes. The party fund that his copy has “Rosemary” written in childlike handwriting on the first page. Cai lies, telling them that he didn’t know about that, as his spell that basically performs text-to-speech doesn’t always recognize handwriting. He has a sinking feeling that Dawn didnt buy his explanation, especially since he knew that he and Dawn had discussed theories about who Rosemary was before. He prepares himself to be questioned, but she raises no objections.

Ress agrees to help research the celestials with Cai, and they get to work trying to figure out a way to transform them back. Cai feels deeply uncomfortable working with Ress, but has to admit his usefulness. He doesn’t speak to Ress much outside of talking about their work, as he fears giving himself away.

After Dawn mentions her suspicion of Cai, the party questions him about his past. He tells a lie about being an only child and gives them a fake last name. After the party intimidates Ress into telling them what he believed to be the truth about Rosemary’s identity: that she was an angel who died of illness when she and Torian were twelve years old.

Cai finally gives in and tells them the truth after they come to him with this information. The Party is understanding, but Dawn, who has been lied to for years, storms out of the room.
